Do you pay the right fare?

Today I was taking bus 16 to cityhall, then this bus driver came up to ask this little boy for more fare. Then I started thinking, before ezlink card was invented, people could cheat the fares.

Some would just pay 80cents or 55cents(for students) and sit all the way to their destinations. Some bus drivers close an eye, and some of course, would not allow. Those who usually pay a lower fare than required, would always watch out for the white-shirt bus conductor who comes up the bus tearing everybody else's ticket. Then if they spot one on board, they would either go into a "i-m-asleep-no-matter-how-you-wake-me-i-m-not-going-to-get-up" unconscious state OR they will pretend that their tickets are wayyyy down their long deep pockets.

I remember a few incidents when I was younger. The ezlink system wasnt invented then.
I was going off to home with Siew Choon, then we realized that she did not have enough coins to get herself home. So Siew Choon decided to not pay the fare since it was peak hours and the people boarding the bus are almost as many as New Zealand's cow (They always say that in advertisement). So we squeeze up the bus. From Choon's expression, you could really tell if one has paid for the fare or not.

Then the other. I was with zizi, so we were discussing what is the best way to save up from bus fare and of course, the best way is to not pay at all. Haha! So we were plotting how to not pay when boarding the bus. So we decided that if the bus is crowded, we'll just pretend and squeeze through. If nobody boards the bus we just tap one card and pretend we tapped 2.

Then the bus came..
Nobody boards the bus except us! That makes it more difficult. So, we pretend to tap 2 cards together, but we only tap 1 and there was only 1 sound. Aparrently the bus driver believed.
Either he close an eye, or he was too busy fallin asleep.

I do pay my fares now ay, I am a good citizen.
